Avery has experience in programming with Python, Java, Mathematica, LaTEX and is proficient at C++ (ROOT), HTML, CSS, Javascript. In the summer of 2015, she was a paid Computer Science and High Energy Particle Physics Intern at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, IL. At Argonne, she implemented ROOT / C++ to develop a particle visualization project, bolstering programming abilities and programmed the collision of high-energy particles in 3D. She is a Student Research Assistant at the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, NC. There, she has tested the feasibility of using SMARTA: Subject Mediated Automatic Remote Testing Apparatus. It is a uniquely designed machine that rewards lemurs by dispensing raisins upon interaction with an android-based app on a tablet. As a result of her work at the Lemur Center, she presented a research poster at the International Primatological Society & American Society of Primatologists joint meeting in Chicago. In the spring of 2016, she was an intern and data collector at Loggerheaded Sea Turtle Facility and Hospital at DEKAMER in Dalyan, Turkey. She has also competed in the 24-hour HackDuke competition.
